WattWorks is a project organized by Tarun Batchu and William Wang (Seniors at Olentangy Liberty High School)

This program is funded by a grant from the Columbus Foundation for

Sustainable Columbus.

PROBLEM & MISSION STATEMENT

Seniors often live in older, less efficient homes, forcing them to spend a greater share of their fixed incomes on energy. In fact, low-income seniors face an energy burden of nearly 17%, compared to the national average of 3%. Watt Works addresses this challenge by providing free energy-saving tools that lower utility costs and help seniors live in safer, more efficient homes.

“Watt Works empowers seniors with free energy-saving tools and community support to cut costs, improve safety, and light the way toward energy justice.”

WHAT WE’RE DOING

WHAT WE’RE DOING TO HELP

We make homes safer, more efficient, and more affordable by delivering:

Free Energy-Saving Kits with LED bulbs, weather-stripping, and advanced power strips.

Home Upgrades like solar chargers, induction stoves, low-flow showerheads, and space heaters.

Eco-Friendly Packaging in labeled boxes with Watt Works stickers.

Simple Conservation Tips to help seniors stretch savings long after installation.

HOW AN APPLIANCE REBOOT CAN HELP

Replacing outdated appliances with energy-efficient models can cut household energy use by 20–30%, lowering monthly bills and improving safety. Upgrades like LED bulbs that use 80% less energy, low-flow showerheads that save up to 2,700 gallons of water per year, and weatherstripping that reduces heating costs by 20% make a measurable difference. Even small changes add up, protecting seniors’ health, saving money, and reducing carbon emissions for a more sustainable future.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

7 Energy-Saving Tips for Seniors

  1. Switch to LED bulbs – Use 80% less energy and last much longer.
  2. Unplug or use smart power strips – Stop “phantom” power drain from electronics.
  3. Seal drafts with weatherstripping/caulk – Prevents heat loss around windows and doors.
  4. Adjust thermostat by 2° – Small changes save up to 10% on heating/cooling bills.
  5. Use low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators – Cut hot water heating costs.
  6. Wash clothes in cold water – Saves energy and protects fabrics.
  7. Maintain HVAC filters – Replace every 1–3 months to keep systems efficient.
